Cerro Solo Ascent Trip Itinerary
| Day 1 |
We meet our Guide at 7 a.m. Check gear and food then arrange last minute details. Start hiking through Beech forest, if we are lucky we may spot a Magellan woodpecker (2 ˝ hrs). We'll reach Laguna Torre and its lateral and terminal moraines left behind by Glacier Grande. Cross Fitz Roy river using a Tyrolean (a zip line with a pulley) and our harnesses. Continue hiking along the southern lateral moraine until reaching Cerro Solo Buttress. Ascending another 150 meters up to Cerro Solo stream. We will ascend 900 meters following the creek up to its base navigating sections of rock that may involve some scrambling. Once we reach the base of the lower glacier we set up camp and prepare dinner. |
| Day 2 |
Early morning start to take advantage of the over night freeze. We put on our crampons and harnesses for a 30 35-degree snow/ice slope. We will be walking on ice, snow, or rock depending on snow/glacier conditions. After a couple of hours, we reach the bottle neck (joint between the upper glacier with the lower glacier). We will cross the bergschrund where possible continuing up a short slope of 40/45 degrees to the upper glacier. Approximately 1 hour more and we summit and are rewarded by the incredible views of the Continental Ice Cap, Cerro Torre Range, Fitz Roy Range, Adelas, and Pier Giorgio among others. After capturing some mental and photographic images we start our way down to our camp. We pack out camp and continue descending, depending on fitness, we might keep going all the way to El Chaltén. Hot shower and a well-deserved dinner awaits us. |
| Day 3 |
This day could be used as a back up day in case of bad weather. Depending on fatigue and fitness of guests, an intermediate camp can be done before heading back to El Chaltén. |
